About the Department of Public Health

The Erasmus MC Department of Public Health strives for health and well-being for all. Through responsible research and education, we advance equitable and sustainable population health at local, national, and global levels.

Research for better health
Our research and education bring experts from a wide range of disciplines together, including epidemiology, medicine, data science, psychology, ethics, history and economics. By combining methodological innovation with empirical research, we address some of the most pressing health challenges of our time—from reducing health inequalities to maintaining the healthcare-system sustainable to mitigating the effects of climate change on public health.

Five complementary programmes
Our department is led by the head of department Hester Lingsma and organized in five complementary programmes: Prevention & Equity; Early Detection & Screening; Healthcare Quality & Sustainability; Medical Ethics, Philosophy and History of Medicine; and the Institute of Medical Education Research Rotterdam (iMERR). Together, these programmes span the full spectrum of public health and healthcare research. Methodological innovation is secured through cross-program expertise in quantitative methods, simulation modelling, implementation science, and intervention research.

Education for future healthcare
Each year, we teach and mentor hundreds of students and healthcare professionals, translating the latest scientific knowledge into learning and practice. Through research-driven teaching and innovative educational approaches, we prepare future professionals to address the complex health challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Collaboration and societal impact
Collaboration lies at the heart of everything we do. We work closely with healthcare professionals, policymakers, patients, and citizens to ensure that our research is relevant. Our work informs clinical guidelines and policy at local, national, and international levels.

Our values
We are committed to scientific excellence, integrity open science, collaboration, and societal impact. As a leading department in research and education within Erasmus MC we take responsibility to propagate our core values -relevance, responsibility and courage- in the Erasmus MC and beyond.
